ARMED SECURITY OFFICER (ASO), FLIGHT OPERATIONS RIPCO SPECIAL AGENT After the terrorist attack of 9-11-01 the FAA immediately curtailed all aircraft operations into Ronald Reagan National Airport (Washington DC) DCA. This prohibition may be waived for commercial smaller aircraft operators who comply with TSA Rules (49 CFR Part 1562). A requirement for this waiver is to have an Armed Security Officer (ASO) on board, vetted and trained by the Federal Air Marshal Service. ASO's are permitted to carry firearms on such flights, pursuant to 49 CFR 1562.29. ASO'S ARE CHARGED WITH PROTECTING THE PILOT,COCKPIT AND AIRCRAFT FROM BEING USED AS A WEAPON OF MASS DESTRUCTION. ASO'S ARE AUTHORIZED TO USE FORCE, INCLUDING DEADLY FORCE.
